Tracye McQuirter, M.P.H., leads vegan seminars worldwide and directed the nation’s first federally funded vegan nutrition program.  Her new book is titled By Any Greens Necessary: A Revolutionary Guide for Black Women Who Want to Eat Great, Get Healthy, Lose Weight, and Look Phat.

Eat Smart Program: Healthy Eating Classes in DC (THIS CLASS IS FULL!)

This series begins September 8, 2009 and is offered in partnership with the Vegetarian Society of DC. Tracye will show people how and why to eat healthy and delicious plant-based foods for better health. Classes include hands-on food demonstrations, how to shop healthy on a budget, nutrition basics, and how to eat out healthfully.

The course is once a week for 9 weeks for a one-time fee of $20 (that’s all!), or the fee can be waived if requested. We receive grant funding to teach the course to help improve the health of DC residents. Past participants have lowered their blood pressure and cholesterol levels, lost weight (up to 15 pounds), and learned how to cook healthier meals.

Free Teleclass: How to Read Food Labels (THIS CLASS IS FULL!)

If you eat anything from a box, bottle, bag, can, or wrapper, you need this class.  For instance, did you know that 4 grams of sugar equals 1 teaspoon?  So if your fruit juice has 20 grams of sugar per serving, you’re drinking 5 teaspoons of sugar.  Double that if the bottle contains 2 servings.

Surprised?  Most folks have no idea how to tell what’s actually in their food– or they’re afraid to find out.  Well, fear not!  It’s time to learn how to scan food labels in seconds (just like the pros).  Find out what to look for if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or obesity, or just want to stay healthy.  This class will explain:

  • The secret of serving sizes, and why you’re eating more than you think
  • The code words for hidden sugars
  • The difference between whole grains and refined grains and why it matters
  • How much sodium and fat is recommended per serving
  • What that paragraph of ingredients is trying to tell you
