This time we’re in the May 2009 issue, with First Lady Michelle Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson, on the cover. This is Essence’s first “green guide” issue and blackvegetarians.org is featured as a resource for meatless meals. We couldn’t be more thrilled! We started the web site to support and inspire African American vegetarians, of which there are an estimated 1.5 million-plus. And as it turns out, our web site was the first of its kind. Today there are scores of web sites, blogs, e-groups, and veg groups throughout the country catering to African American vegetarians. We’re proud to be a part of a long line of folks eating veg and inspiring others to do the same for more vibrant health, a greener planet, compassion for animals, deeper spirituality, and other reasons.
