ABOUT THE BOOK:

With attitude and inspiration, this lifestyle guide shows black women how they can be healthy, hippy, and happy by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes as part of an active lifestyle. African American women face a health crisis and explosive rates of death and disability from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, and this book provides authoritative research to illustrate how a plant-based diet can reverse this trend.

Encouraging readers to think about the foods they choose and what their choices mean to overall health, the manual shows that a diet of meat, fish, fowl, dairy, and refined grains is hazardous not only to human bodies but also to the planet and animals. With its much-needed nutritional analysis, the book also offers practical advice about how to transition to vegan foods; delicious and nutritious recipes; a comprehensive grocery shopping list for restocking the fridge and pantry; recommended resources; and inspirational vegetarian quotes from famous African Americans, including Oprah Winfrey, Alice Walker, Angela Bassett, Erykah Badu, Russell Simmons, and Dick Gregory.

I just got the copyedited manuscript of my book back from my publisher. I’m ecstatic!!! I love having my writing critiqued. If you’re a writer at heart, you understand the thrill. The red track changes are music to my eyes–as long as they’re not taking over the whole page!

So, I have 5 days to review the copyedits and make any changes to the manuscript that are needed. It’s not a lot of time and I work 4 of those days, so I asked my publisher (Chicago Review Press/Lawrence Hill) if I could have a little more time. We’ll see.

(Good news: as I was writing this post, I got an email from my publisher and they gave me 3 more days!)

I also have a book cover photo update. Thanks to all of you who sent in suggestions about which photo I should use. The most votes were for #3398 and #3401. (#3398 is the photo with this blog post, but here’s the link if you want to see them on the web site again: www.imaginephoto.printroom.com/byanygreensnecessary.

As it turns out, these are the same two photos the publisher and I had narrowed it down to. (Ya’ll have great taste.) So by last Thursday, we made a decision to go with #3401, even though I like #3398 the best. But sometimes you gotta be willing to compromise (especially me).

Then I got an email from my publisher on Monday saying that when the sales and marketing team saw the photos–and these are the folks that have 30 seconds to convince the buyers for national bookstores to actually carry the book–they decided we should go with #3398, instead. So, things worked out!

More updates coming soon. For now, I got some reading to do…

My publisher and I are trying to decide (um…agree) on the cover photo for my book. So, can you help us choose? We want the image itself to convey the book title, By Any Greens Necessary: A Revolutionary Guide for Black Women Who Want to Get Healthy, Lose Weight, Eat Great, and Look Phat.

You can see the photos at: www.imaginephoto.printroom.com/byanygreensnecessary. There’s a brief slide show with a few pics on the homepage, which is kind of fun. To see all the photos, click ”Tracye Cover Shots (Alone)” on the left side. Pls pick about 3 or 4 photos that you like best, and email me the corresponding numbers.

Pls only choose the pics in which I’m standing up. The sitting ones are for the author photos. Actually, you can help choose the author photo, too, although this one’s easier because we’ve narrowed it down to three: #3393, #3394, or #3396. This will go on the back cover and in the media kits. Feel free to let me know which one you prefer.

And if you’re curious about the family shots of my mother, my niece, and me, we were unanimous on that one: #3335. The ones of my mother by herself were some that the photographer took just for fun. I think my mom looks gorgeous! The photographer agrees–she wants to use her as a model. Go, mom!

The photographer was Kea Taylor. She’s simply excellent. Her web site is www.imaginephotographyonline.com.

Well, that’s it. Thanks so much for your help. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

It’s been a good little while since I last blogged, so here’s an update. I spent the past few months holed up in a little room in my house called my office feverishly writing my By Any Greens Necessary book to meet my July 1st deadline (which magically became July 8th, thanks to my fairy godmother of an agent, Audra Barrett).

So, I am THRILLED to report that my manuscript–all 200 and something pages of it–is now in the hands of my publisher, Chicago Review Press, and we expect it to be in your hands by Spring 2010! You can read more about the book here.

Now I’m all about the business of making this baby a bestseller when it comes out. If you personally know any famous sisters who can endorse my book, like, um… Michelle Obama or Oprah, hook me up!

In the meantime, I’m also working hard as the program director for the Vegetarian Society of DC’s Eat Smart nutrition program starting in September. It’s the nation’s first community-based, vegan nutrition program launched with federal funding. Our goal is to help DC residents get healthier by eating more plant-based foods. If you or someone you know is in the DC area and want to learn more, check us out here.

And… I’m going to be a presenter at this year’s Vegfest in DC in September. It’s our very own free, outdoor veggie festival in the nation’s capital. Read all about it here. I hope to see some of ya’ll there!

That’s it for now. Whew! Talk to you soon.
