The DC Green Festival is this weekend at the Washington Convention Center. It’s a big green party with hundreds of vendors, speakers, kids activities, and films about everything green you can imagine. The festival is held every year in DC, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle. Here’s the web site for more info: www.greenfestivals.org. Last night, one of the headliners of the Green Festival, Naomi Davis of Blacks in Green (BIG), hosted a networking soiree at Busboys and Poets for DC folks interested in African Americans and the environment. I went with my sister (who has a fabulous blog called Chocolate and Arugula about all things black folks and green at http://chocolateyarugula.blogspot.com). I talked about my book and the centrality of food in the environmental movement. Specifically, that the meat and dairy we eat causes more global warming than the cars we drive. The United Nations said in 2006 that growing animals for food causes more climate change than all the world’s transportation combined. So my basic point was that it’s our plate or our planet–it’s our choice. I met lots of interesting folks last night of all ages involved in so many aspects of the green movement–it was exhilarating! After I teach my Eat Smart class this morning, I’m headed on down to the Green Festival. I’ll be the one sporting the pink knit cap (pink does go with green, right?) I hope to see you there!
