On Sunday, April 4, 2010, African American women across the country will put the “move” back in movement with GirlTrek, a national nonprofit that inspires and organizes black women and girls to live healthier and more fulfilled lives.

GirlTrek challenges black females to walk 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 12 weeks, from April 4 through June 26, 2010.  There are over 500 trekkers already on board.

With 80% of African American women overweight and 50% obese, this is a challenge we can step up to.

Visit the web site for more information about joining trek teams in your city.  You can also read the success stories of women who have gotten involved since 2009, when the idea for GirlTrek began.  And, of course, be sure to eat plenty of healthy plant-based foods to maximize the effects of your treks!

Day 2 and I am feeling great! I started at 7:45am and got into the swing of my walk. The fresh air, the feeling of movement of my body, the chance to do some thinking. These morning walks are beginning to refresh me mentally, emotionally, spiritually. Passover/Pesach ends on Tuesday and I have seen such growth in my own life. I stepped out of Egypt when I made the decision to begin to eat better food. I cleaned out my cabinets and frig. I placed fruits, organic veggies , whole grain breads in my house.

What a change in me and my body. I am so glad to have come across GirlTrek. Thank you for being out there. We, as Black women, must reclaim our health. We have to care about ourselves! I am thinking about taking up jogging. Here I am at 54 thinking about jogging!
Go me!
